Digging, Chewing, and Foraging – Must Do Instincts!

Rabbits are captivating creatures, whether they are hopping through the wild or lounging in our living rooms. While domestic rabbits might differ in some ways from their wild counterparts, they still retain many of the same natural instincts and behaviors. Among these, digging, chewing, and foraging are especially important.

Understanding these behaviors and providing opportunities for them to “be rabbits” is just as important as providing the proper diet. It also will save our couches and woodwork.

The Instinct to Dig

Digging is an innate behavior for rabbits. In the wild, rabbits dig elaborate burrow systems called warrens. These warrens provide shelter from predators, extreme weather, and a safe place to raise their young. The need to dig is deeply ingrained in their genetic makeup. For domestic rabbits, this instinct doesn't disappear just because they live in a more protected environment.

Benefits of Digging for Domestic Rabbits:

1. Mental Stimulation: Digging provides essential mental stimulation. It keeps rabbits engaged and prevents boredom, which can lead to destructive behaviors or depression.

2. Physical Exercise: The act of digging is excellent physical exercise. It helps maintain a healthy weight and strengthens their muscles.

3. Natural Behavior: Allowing rabbits to dig helps them express their natural behaviors, which contributes to their overall happiness and reduces stress. Providing a digging box filled with soil, sand, or shredded paper can satisfy this need. Some rabbits might also enjoy digging in old towels or blankets.

The Need to Chew

Rabbits are natural foragers and chewers. In the wild, they constantly gnaw on a variety of materials, from plants to tree bark. This behavior serves multiple purposes.

Benefits of Chewing for Domestic Rabbits:

1. Dental Health: Rabbits’ teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. Chewing on fibrous materials like hay helps wear down their teeth naturally, preventing dental issues.

2. Mental Stimulation: Like digging, chewing provides mental stimulation and keeps rabbits occupied.

3. Digestive Health: Consuming high fiber foods like hay aids in proper digestion and helps prevent gastrointestinal stasis, a common and serious condition in rabbits.

Providing plenty of hay, soft wooden toys, and safe chewable objects is crucial to keep their teeth healthy and to prevent boredom.   Rabbits prefer the softer woods like pine and aspen and yes, kiln dried pine which you buy in home improvement stores is perfectly safe for them to chew.

The Importance of Foraging

Foraging is a vital activity for wild rabbits, who spend a large part of their day searching for food. This activity not only provides physical exercise but also keeps their minds sharp as they navigate and solve problems to find nourishment.

Benefits of Foraging for Domestic Rabbits:

1. Mental Engagement: Foraging mimics the challenges rabbits face in the wild, keeping their minds active and sharp.

2. Physical Activity: It encourages movement, helping rabbits stay fit and healthy.

3. Natural Instincts: Foraging allows rabbits to express natural behaviors, reducing stress and enhancing their overall wellbeing.

You can stimulate foraging behavior in domestic rabbits by hiding their food around their enclosure, using treat dispensing toys, or creating DIY forage spots with hay and healthy treats. Putting your rabbits hay IN the litterbox is the perfect way to encourage them to eat more hay and allows them to forage through it and pick out the best pieces. Putting hay in racks or feeders to keep it neat does not benefit your rabbit. Many people find that their rabbits pull all the hay out of the holders and spread it around. That is what they need to do! Don't take that away from them.

 Conclusion

Understanding and catering to the natural behaviors of digging, chewing, and foraging can greatly enhance the quality of life for domestic rabbits. These activities not only provide essential mental and physical stimulation but also help rabbits express their innate behaviors, leading to happier, healthier pets.

Be sure to remove all tape and stickers from cardboard boxes. Plain cardboard boxes are available on Amazon as are brown paper bags. For big buns, you can buy leaf collection paper bags. By creating an environment that respects and nurtures these instincts, we can ensure our furry friends lead fulfilling lives. Please Encourage these activities. Your rabbit will love you for it!
